He mixed five front-nine bogeys with three on the back, as well as a double- bogey and a birdie. He then tried to putt the ball up to the green, but the result was the same.

Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has come through a hard opening day at the US Open in NY, now sitting in a tie for 20th, four shots off the leaders. "It was wind, and I've played in wind before, so that wasn't the issue".

Three-time victor Tiger Woods racked up a triple-bogey 7 on his first hole after hitting his approach over the back of the green and twice letting his recovery shot fall back down towards his feet.

McIlroy equalled the worst round of his major career as he slumped to a 10-over-par 80, while Woods only fared slightly better as he triple-bogeyed his opening hole on his way to an opening-round 78.

McIlroy and playing partners Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth were among the early starters hoping to take advantage of a course softened by Wednesday's rain.

However, worst round of the day so far goes to former British Amateur champion Scott Gregory, who suffered through a 22-over 92.

Thursday at Shinnecock should rock as the U.S. Open returns to its roots for the first time since 2004 and its fifth-ever national championship unfolds in Long Island.

"It would have had to have been eight years ago or more, " Gregory said of the last time he didn't break 90 for 18 holes.
