NEW YORK, June 16 ― New US research has found that higher circulating vitamin D concentrations are significantly associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer and third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the United States. Heavy doses of vitamin D can be toxic. According to a large global study published last week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, US, Vitamin D may be protective against colorectal cancer.

In the study, experts analyzed more than 5 700 cases of colorectal cancer and found an interesting correlation between lack of vitamin D and increased risk of colorectal cancer.

The National Academy of Science recommends that having vitamin D blood levels of 20 ng/ml or above is adequate for bone health.

The latest research, which appears in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, was conducted by scientists from NCI, the American Cancer Society, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and 20 other medical centers and organizations around the world.

The associations still held even after the team had taken into account other known colorectal cancer risk factors, and the protective effect of vitamin D was also found in all subgroups examined.

Because of this, people shouldn't rely on supplements to get their vitamin D, McCullough said.

The study found that women with blood levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (OH) - the main form of vitamin D in blood - above 60 ng/ml (nanograms per millilitre) had one-fifth the risk of breast cancer compared to those with less than 20 ng/ml.

The new study addressed numerous gaps and problems of earlier studies, according to Smith-Warner. The study did not evaluate whether adding vitamin D through either food, sunlight, or supplements made a difference in cancer risk.

Sources of vitamin D include sun exposure, fatty fish like salmon and trout, and foods such as milk and orange juice that are fortified with the vitamin.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 24 in women and 1 in 22 in men.

This latest study is designed primarily to guide policymakers in setting dietary and nutrition guidelines.

"This study strengthens the evidence that vitamin D may also help prevent colorectal cancer", said Marjorie McCullough with the American Cancer Society. But official recommendations might change at some point, the researchers said, given the study's conclusion that the recommended levels may be too low to protect against colorectal cancer.
