Lucasfilm Reportedly Shelves 'Star Wars' Spinoff Movies

If true - and it's important to note this news has not been officially confirmed by either Lucasfilm or Disney - that would mean that both the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff and the standalone Boba Fett movie, both of which were in development before Solo's release, are likely to be put on the back burner for now.

James Mangold was also supposed to be writing and directing a Boba Fett spinoff movie, but it's noted that was planned prior to the release of Han Solo, so it sounds as if Boba Fett isn't happening as well.

The debates continue to rage over what led Solo to tank with audiences, but if this report proves true, Lucasfilm is deciding to cut its losses for now and refocus on moving the Star Wars universe forward with flagship stories - instead of continuing to look back. Although Solo has made more than $194.8 million at the box office domestically (and is the fifth highest-grossing film of 2018 to date), it's been seen as a disappointment compared to other recent Star Wars releases. Abrams and Rian Johnson, Solo went head-to-head with a slew of summer blockbusters in May, opening mere weeks after box office juggernauts Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2.

It's been a while since we've had the chance to break out the Star Wars Rumour Alert Klaxon, but this feels like an appropriate moment. Initially announced as "anthology" movies, the spinoffs got off to a rocky start and haven't exactly been smooth sailing. And while "Rogue One" managed to be a box-office success, Tony Gilroy was brought in for extensive reshoots. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired in the middle of shooting "Solo", with Ron Howard taking over.

Star Wars: Episode X, XI and XII may be a long way off, but Lucasfilm is already laying the groundwork.
