Rory McIlroy on Phil Mickelson's Infamous US Open Putt: 'Honestly, I Laughed'

Phil Mickelson appeared to have a rush of blood as he hit a still moving putt Saturday

Phil Mickelson has finally apologised - four days after he deliberately hit a moving ball at last week's US Open to prevent it rolling off the green.

The USGA invoked the rule that delivers a two-stroke penalty for hitting a moving ball, but many wondered why Mickelson wasn't disqualified from the tournament entirely.

The latest comments from Mickelson, however, suggest his actions - which many critics felt bent the usual etiquette and spirit of the game -were more of an impulse rather than the calculated use of the rule book.

"It's been on the golf course, players complaining, Phil [Mickelson], and you never really want that because it's such a hard thing to do to win a major".

Amy Mickelson says husband Phil is a good man who had a bad moment.

"Look, I don't mean disrespect to anybody", Mickelson said after the incident on Saturday.

"He joked about it right as we went down the first hole", Fowler said.

"I thought Phil could've handled it differently", McDowell said at TPC River Highlands, where Pádraig Harrington and Seamus Power complete the Irish challenge.

The Englishman told Omnisport: "He was making a statement that, "This is ridiculous and I'm going to show you how ridiculous this is". "I just wish they would leave it alone and just let it go. So it's just, it's us applying the rules".

USGA's senior managing director of championships and governance John Bodenhamer stated that the reason Mickelson was not disqualified from the competition was because Mickelson "didn't purposely deflect or stop the ball, which is talked about in the reference under Rule 14-5". Knowing Phil, he knew what he was doing. Look, as a player who has been in that headspace at that tournament, I can see it happening to people.

"So if that was the intent, then what's the harm in that?" I took the 2-shot penalty and moved on. Had he played the ball conventionally, he risked a score higher than the 10 he ended up getting on the par 4 hole.

The apology comes after some initial defiance on the matter from Mickelson.
