The 25-year-old full-back has one senior England cap and had loan spells at Burnley and Bolton before being released by Liverpool, where he made 51 appearances.

'The club is in talks, ' confirmed McAllister.

"But the big thing is that we know him, we know his character and we think he can deal with 50,000".

'The expectation here is exactly the same as Liverpool.

'He has been unlucky with injuries.

Flanagan's addition would create renewed speculation over the future of James Tavernier. Sure there's a useful player in there but didn't want him back.

Gers kick off the Steven Gerrard era at Ibrox against Macedonian side FK Shkupi on July 12 before making the return trip a week later after the qualification draw was made on Wednesday.

"The message to the players will be to focus on the first game", he told RangersTV. 'I don't think it will be a very hard team talk, that first qualifying round, because of what happened previous year.

"The team and the squad were very complacent and went out at that stage, so the team-talk is already done really". This club belongs in Europe, but first and foremost, we have to go and qualify, and the new players we bring in here; that chat is always on the agenda.
