With Leonard requesting a trade, the Spurs are in a tough spot.

"They basically shut the door on us", one Lakers source told ESPN.

Part of the reason why better offers have seemingly not been made is likely because many around the National Basketball Association believe that Leonard has already chose to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers next summer when his contract ends. After months of speculation regarding whether he would sign a super-max contract extension this offseason, multiple outlets reported Friday that the star player wants to be traded.

According to ESPN's report, Popovich has been seeking a meeting with Leonard for weeks, but Leonard has made it hard to set up a meeting.

McMenamin also says that the #Cavs put in a call to the #Spurs about Kawhi Leonard, but they don't believe they have the necessary assets to acquire the 2014 NBA Finals MVP.

That has been communicated to those teams seeking trade talks, although the Spurs have encouraged some rival team executives calling about Leonard to present an offer if they so choose, league sources said.

Dec 30, 2017, Detroit, MI, USA: San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard reacts after a play during the first quarter against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena.

This comes on the heels of a report from McMenamin saying the Cavs aren't actively shopping five-time All-Star Kevin Love, so whether this means that the Cavs never offered Love in a deal for Leonard or were rebuffed by an offer that included Love and the 8th overall pick in the upcoming draft is unclear.

The Spurs can try to mend their relationship with Leonard.

Buford would not discuss if teams have approached the Spurs about a deal.
