Frustrated Mickelson swats moving ball with putter at U.S. Open

There were many people who wondered whether Phil Mickelson deserved to tee it up in Sunday's final round of the 2018 U.S. Open after that freaky decision to hit his golf ball while in was still moving on the 13th green on Saturday.

In a text sent to reporters, Mickelson added: "I know this should've come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down". He says: "My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend". "I think everyone should be allowed to have a moment".

Mickelson got tagged with a two-stroke penalty, and later sounded an unrepentant note, saying he only chased down the rolling ball because he didn't want to have to play from off the green once again.

With his missed bogey putt appearing to head off the green, Mickelson hit it back towards the hole before eventually needing eight strokes to complete the par-four 13th. Mickelson was assessed a two-stroke penalty for the unsportsmanlike maneuver and wound up with a six-over 10 on the hole.

Mickelson had little to say after his final round of 69 at Shinnecock Hills, which left him 16-over and tied for 48th, 15 shots behind victor Brooks Koepka.

"It's meant to take advantage of the rules as best you can and in that situation I was just going back and forth and I'd gladly take the two shots over continuing that display", he had said after Saturday's round.

A number of fellow professionals felt Mickelson should have been disqualified or withdrawn himself, but he took his place in the field for the final round and covered the front nine in three under par before dropping a shot on the 11th. But USGA CEO Mike Davis told him that wouldn't be necessary.

Asked while he walked if he had any regrets about the incident on Saturday, he replied: 'I think the real question is what am I going to do next.

Andrew "Beef" Johnston described playing partner Phil Mickelson's putt as a "moment of madness".

On Monday (NZT) the USGA issued a statement clarifying its position, contending that because Mickelson "made a stroke at the ball.as opposed to another act to deflect or stop the ball in motion", his act specifically fell under rule 14-5 and not 1-2, and thus there were no grounds for disqualification, the Washington Post reported.

"Phil really did want to understand how the rule operates because he didn't want to.as he said to me, 'Mike, I don't want to play in this championship if I should have been disqualified, '" USGA chief executive Mike Davis said, according to ESPN.
