Chevrolet Blazer strays far from its rugged off-road roots

The model won't compete against the upcoming born-again Ford Bronco, though.

Chevrolet is raising the bar on crossover design with the introduction of the 2019 Blazer as the newest member of the industry's broadest, freshest crossover and SUV lineup since 2015. But the 2019 Blazer is a very different kind of vehicle. "The introduction of the all-new Blazer builds on that momentum and further strengthens the most comprehensive lineup of crossovers and SUVs on the market today". On RS and Premier models, a twin-clutch AWD system can deliver varying levels of power to the rear wheels for better traction and handling. Going the crossover route yields major benefits in road manners and fuel efficiency, which explains Chevy's choice. The back end ditches the Camaro look for a more Traverse-like design. Unlike previous Blazers, this one is not based on a pickup truck platform.

Five-passenger seating with up to 64.2 cubic feet (1,818 L) of max cargo space with second-row seats folded flat.

When it goes on sale early next year, the Blazer will be available with either a 193 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or 305 hp 3.6-liter V6, both paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Chevy claims the Blazer will tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped, which is fairly competitive for a vehicle in this class, but less than the Chevy Traverse's 5,000-pound maximum tow rating. More to the point, the vehicles featured in the following clips are near-production prototypes. The front-drive Blazer will offer all-wheel drive as an option. Six USB ports and wireless phone charging will be offered as well.

General Motors, Chevrolet's parent company, hasn't made a Blazer since 2005.

Automatic heated steering wheel and automatic heated/ventilated front seats - These available features work with Remote Start and/or automatic climate control to automatically adjust temperature to help maintain comfort. It streams feed from the rearview camera to a screen that doubles as a conventional mirror.

The Chevrolet Blazer will arrive at USA dealerships in early 2019. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date. The Chevrolet designer team didn't try to make it look like the old Blazers, he said, but they did want it to reflect their youthful appeal.
