South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is urging commuters to switch to public transport and contribute towards curbing air pollution. Representatives from the police were also offering free security marking for bikes.

Bill Chapple OBE, county council cabinet member for planning and environment said: "Together with the districts we met in May for the country's first ever Air Quality conference to explore joined up working and maximising the health benefits of clean air for residents".

"We are extremely disappointed that the Government has not taken stronger action on auto manufacturers".

TRANSPORT bosses are urging people to mark Clean Air Day today by leaving their auto at home.

So how can you get your children involved in the day?

"The level of support available to local authorities is now inadequate".

Rachel Hartshorne, founder and co-ordinator of Healthy Air Leeds, said: "The council's clean air zone plans do not encourage people to leave their cars at home for short journeys".

Waltham Forest council in the north east of London is also working with schools to promote Clean Air Day, having recruited more than 30 schoolchildren to become Air Quality Ambassadors ahead of the event.

"The message is simple: using public transport improves air quality and the health of everyone in the region", said Mr Taylor.

Children at a Leicester school were given a chance to enjoy a traffic-free street as part of national Clean Air Day.

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council said: "I am proud that the lead that we have taken in Oxford on tackling poor air quality through our low emission zone and now our commitment to a zero emission zone is being recognised".

"Events such as the Sky Ride and Tour De Yorkshire really show how much better Leeds city centre is without cars clogging it up, we'd love to see more space for cyclists and pedestrians than drivers".

The report, due to be published in autumn 2019, will provide practical recommendations to Government on what can be done to reduce indoor air pollution.

As part of its support for this year's NCAD, earlier this week, CitiPark brought the New Nissan LEAF electric auto to the main mall at the Merrion Centre in Leeds, to educate local schoolchildren about the benefits of electric vehicles on our environment.

Alternative fuels provider Certas is calling for businesses to offer their views on alternative fuels and the role they have to play in the UK's efforts to reduce air pollution.
