Another Govt. Report Says Russia Wanted Trump To Win The 2016 Election

Backing Intelligence Agencies, U.S. Senate Panel Says Russia Interfered in 2016 Election to Help Trump Win

A Senate panel investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election released Tuesday a written summary of its determination that the USA intelligence community correctly concluded Moscow sought to help Donald Trump win.

The committee also said the ICA had provided a range of reporting to support its assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign aimed at the election, and that he and the Russian government had developed "a clear preference for President-elect Trump". Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the USA democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency.

And that, says Politico, raises even more questions to the US President and many of his allies, rejected all speculation about the possible collusion of the Russians and of the electoral headquarters of the trump. Richard Burr, the Republican chairman of the committee, said in a statement. It's a conclusion that's been affirmed by Trump's entire national security team, though the president himself has denied the charges. Trump tweeted on June 28, then questioned whether law enforcement had adequately investigated the issue.

The ICA originally stoked some controversy on the right when it said the CIA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had "high confidence" in its findings while the National Security Agency had "moderate confidence".

Trump has also called the FBI's investigation into potential Russian coordination with his campaign a "witch hunt" created to delegitimise his presidency.

The panel also concluded that the ICA fell short in describing the full scope of Russia's interference in U.S. politics and the US's response.

"The Committee has spent the last 16 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft and analytic work underpinning the Intelligence Community Assessment and sees no reason to dispute the conclusions", committee chair Sen.

The Senate Intelligence Committee report is also a rebuke of an earlier report issued by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee - a committee run by close Trump associate Devin Nunes - that the intelligence community had made serious mistakes in its investigation of the 2016 election, according to a CNN Wire report.

In the January 2017 report, the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation said they had "high confidence" in the conclusion about Putin favouring Trump while the NSA said it had "moderate confidence".

Russian interference in the 2016 election was created to cause Democrat Hillary Clinton (above) to lose.

"In all the interviews of those who drafted and prepared the ICA (intelligence community assessment), the committee heard consistently that analysts were under no politically motivated pressure to reach any conclusions", the committee said. Senators also criticized the intelligence community's report for not providing more comprehensive historical context, to put Russia's 2016 operation into better perspective.

All in all, the Senate panel's report was a unflinching contradiction of numerous core claims made by Trump allies in the House.

"All analysts expressed that they were free to debate, object to content and assess confidence levels, as is normal and proper for the analytic process", CNN quoted the committee as writing.
