Suspected rhino poachers are believed to have been killed by a pride of lions after human remains were found Tuesday at a South African game reserve.

Authorities believe the men entered the game reserve in the early hours of Monday; they were found dismembered the following day, the news agency reports.

"We had a poaching around this exact same time two years ago", he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said: "A riffle and an axe were found at the scene". The dog heard something and attempted to alert its handler, who brushed it off as the usual sound lions make.

Mr Fox said: 'The lions may have eaten more of them it is hard to tell as the area is very thick with bush and you can not be sure what they have taken off to feed on elsewhere.

"The lions are our watchers and guardians and they picked the wrong pride and became a meal", said Nick Fox, 60, who owns the reserve.

A pride of lions ate a group of poachers after they broke into a game reserve earlier this week in South Africa to hunt rhinoceroses.

"The only body part we found was one skull and one bit of pelvis, everything else was completely gone", he told Newsweek.

Police forensics officers were on the scene conducting tests on the remains of the victims.

Poachers have broken into the popular 30-square-mile reserve in the Eastern Cape before. They were "armed with, amongst other things, a high powered rifle with a silencer, an ax, wire cutters and had food supplies for a number of days", according to a press release.

Nine rhinos have been killed by poachers in Eastern Cape province this year, according to South Africa's Times.

His plans to get Cecil's head mounted for his trophy room ended when one of Palmer's guides surrendered the lion's remains to officials in Africa.

"The firearm has been taken by police and will be sent to the ballistics laboratory to establish if it has been used in any other poaching or crimes".

"Clearly, the poachers had walked into a pride of six lions and some, if not all had been killed", he said.

The poachers had a rifle, but they did not get off a shot before the lions took them down, Fox said.
