Tiny Hurricane Beryl continues west; Tropical Depression Three forms off east coast

New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

A system in the Atlantic has quickly developed into the second tropical storm of the 2018 hurricane season. The storm is forecast to become a hurricane by Friday or Saturday, but should get shredded by strong wind shear before it reaches the islands, forecasters said.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the island of Barbados and a tropical storm watch has been posted for Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy. It is east of SC and forecasters believe the system could strengthen before the weekend as it moves to the west-northwest and then to the north between Bermuda and the East Coast of the United States. "By Tuesday, a faster northeastward motion is expected to begin", forecasters said. The Category 1 storm is expected to achieve wind speeds of 100 miles per hour, reaching Category 2 status, over the next day before gradually weakening to tropical storm force. On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will approach the Lesser Antilles over the weekend and cross the island chain late Sunday or Monday.

There is no indication the depression will form into a hurricane, much less strike Florida or Indian River County, according to forecasters. These shearing winds should weaken this system as it is reaching the Lesser Antilles.

Tropical Depression Two, in the lower right of this GOES-16 satellite image, is moving west toward the Caribbean.

A tropical depression forms when a low-pressure area is accompanied by thunderstorms that produce a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 miles per hour. "Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles [55 km] from the center". The expectations for movement and future weakening near the Lesser Antilles have not fundamentally changed from earlier in the day.

Beryl is not the only item of note in the tropics as we wrap up the first week of July.
