Baltimore: hospital evacuated due to tuberculosis threat – reports

The Baltimore City Fire Department investigated after a small tube containing a frozen sample of the bacteria was dropped on an internal bridge between two cancer research buildings, according to the hospital. The hospital staffs said that a tiny quantity of the germ accidentally released into its facilities during transportation.

The Wall Street Journal said that both buildings reopened just after 4 p.m. this afternoon after it was determined that there was no risk.

No cases of the infection being exposed to any person on the campus has been reported so far, however, both building continued to remain evacuated for several hours till the time the public health officials gave an all-clear sign, said Hoppe. The drop occurred in the internal bridge that connects the hospital's Cancer Research Building 1 to its Cancer Research Building 2 - a non-patient area of the hospital.

Hospital employees told 11 News that a fire alarm was pulled and they were subsequently told to evacuate 1501 Jefferson St.

WMAR reports that a hazmat investigation is underway after tuberculosis was reportedly released into two Johns Hopkins cancer centers. The Baltimore City Fire Department is now on-scene at 1500 block of Jefferson Street. However, in the United States, the disease is gradually becoming rare. It's possible to be infected with TB without getting ill, in which case it can still be spread. TB could result in hacking cough, which tends to continue up to weeks.

Symptoms include coughing up blood, fever, chills, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains, weight loss and fatigue. The hospital has verified that they turned off the ventilation system within the hospital immediately after the reported spill because tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial disease that can infect the respiratory system.
