Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Barrie area

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings has been issued for the Greater Toronto Area in addition to the heat warning that has remained constant over the past week. All severe thunderstorm warnings have since ended.

After a week of intense heat, the GTA and much of southern Ontario could be in for a drenching this evening.

Conditions are favourable for the development of risky thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain.

The agency released a weather statement saying the thunderstorm will be slow moving, which means residents may see between 25 and 50 milometers of rain. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 25 C on Friday with an overnight low of 10 C heading into Saturday.

As the thunderstorm develops, intense lightening is likely.

Environment Canada said people are advised to seek shelter if threatening weather approaches. A cool-down is expected on Friday as the cold front passes through.

The temperature in Toronto sat at around 31 C as of 5:30 p.m., though it feels more like 39 with the humidex.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
