4-year-old with cerebral palsy celebrates after taking first independent steps

"First steps - 4 years, 10 months I can't even put into words how we are feeling", a post on the "Mighty Miss Maya - Will to Walk" Facebook page said.

Maya Tisdale was born as a micro preemie weighing only 1 pound back in 2013. "No, I'm OK. I can do it", Maya responded. Her fifth birthday is just two months away, and her family thinks that by then, mighty miss Maya will be hard to keep up with. The illness left her unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds and required her to use a walker. "She's doing it. You've done it for like a minute", the girl's brother can be heard saying in the video.

Her mom caught the whole thing on video and it's so inspirational.

Her mother, Ann Tisdale, told ABC News Wednesday that Maya was born four months early at 26 weeks and weighed 1 pound, 10 ounces at birth.

Maya lives with cerebral palsy, but it didn't stop her from beating the odds to take her first steps - steps doctors said she wouldn't be able to take for months.

In May, she and her family traveled to St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri, where she underwent a surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR).

Maya previously walked with support.

"I'm walking, you guys, without my canes".

Seven weeks after her surgery, Maya took a few steps on her own which left her parents stunned.

While she celebrated this joyous moment for her daughter, Tisdale said Maya had a "long road of learning" ahead of her.

"Despite these challenges, Maya gives it her all every day". She still has the damage in her brain and she still has some tightness in her legs. We just couldn't believe it.
