Alleged rhino poachers mauled to death by lions in South Africa

Human remains found in a South African game reserve are believed to be those of a gang of rhino poachers who ran into a pack of lions.

The incident happened at the Sibuya Game Reserve sometime between the evening of July 1 and the morning of July 2.

"At about 4.30pm on Tuesday, one of our field guides on game drive alerted the Anti-Poaching Unit that there appeared to be human remains as well as other items in the immediate vicinity of the lions", he said.

Fair game? Hunting hunters for Rhinos died for hunting and ate by lions Men entered the Sibuya Game Reserve on the armed southeast coast with a high powered rifle and an ax in the early hours of Monday.

A May 2018 "60 Minutes" report revealed that they are being slaughtered at the shocking rate of three a day at the hands of poachers like the group killed in Sibuya. At the same time he'd heard a commotion coming from the lions so he suspected that's what prompted a reaction from the dog.

"They [found] an ax and high-powered rifle with a silencer, which is a surefire sign of rhino poachers", Fox added. Instead, they met their own demise when a pride of lions attacked and killed them.

Fox said he alerted the Indalo Anti-Poaching Cluster and the local police, which are now combing the area for clues.

Mr Fox said: "The lions may have eaten more of them it is hard to tell as the area is very thick with bush and you can not be sure what they have taken off to feed on elsewhere".

One head and a number of bloodied body parts and limbs have been recovered from the area, along with three pairs of empty shoes.

"At this stage it is not clear exactly how many poachers were killed but the Police forensic team continue to investigate".

After ensuring the lions were not a threat to tourists, Fox said there will not be any changes to "the status quo of our lions".

So far this year, nine rhinos have been killed in East Cape Reserves.
