Andrew Wheeler to head EPA after Pruitt resignation

Scott Pruitt resigns after scandal-plagued tenure

But some worry that his promotion may accelerate the Trump administration's determined dismantling of the EPA. Andrew Wheeler also doubts that humans are a primary cause of the rapid increase in climate change. The move left Wheeler to assume his duties. "Administrator Pruitt, through his own actions, lost that trust".

Senior White House advisor Stephen Miller has also been confronted by protesters, including being called a "fascist" while dining at a Mexican restaurant and, most recently, facing a crowd of demonstrators outside his home in D.C. who gathered to denounce the zero immigration policy, USA Today reported. "But we will absolutely keep up the pressure", Edwards said Monday in an interview with ThinkProgress.

Mr Pruitt's resignation is the latest in a long list of White House departures since Mr Trump took office a year ago. He rented an apartment linked to oil industry lobbyists in a pricey neighborhood of the capital for a mere $50 a night, a sum he only paid on nights he actually slept there.

Despite the laundry list of ethics complaints putting him on thin ice, Pruitt was invited to and appeared at the White House Wednesday for Trump's Independence Day celebration, where he and other cabinet members received a shout-out from the president.

Senator Inhofe, who dismisses global warming as a hoax and famously tossed a snowball on the Senate floor to prove his point, hailed Wheeler's ascension to EPA chief.

"Andrew Wheeler's coal credentials are without equal". Republicans and Democrats told the newspaper that Wheeler "has far more energy and environmental policy experience than Pruitt and has shown a willingness to forge compromises with the other party". Wheeler acknowledged he attended but said he couldn't remember any details. The latter's career traces back to the EPA, where he worked in its Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics in Pres. George H.W. Bush's administration.

Working on behalf of Murray Energy, the nation's largest privately owned coal company, Wheeler lobbied for the repeal of environmental regulations.

Despite Trump's praise, Pruitt's departure follows a number of embarrassing stories and reports about his work at the EPA, which included wild spending, efforts to land his wife a high-paying job by using his powerful office and questionable practices. Murray's CEO Robert Murray has supported Trump for years, and long worked to do away with health and safety regulations like the Clean Power Plan. The next EPA administrator needs to be someone who will uphold independent science and commit wholeheartedly to the agency's science-based mission of protecting public health and the environment.

Prior to joining the EPA, Wheeler also lobbied for the bailout of the coal industry on behalf of Murray Energy.

The Senate confirmed Wheeler as the agency's deputy administrator in April. "As a coal lobbyist, getting a bailout for the coal industry will likely be one of his top priorities at the EPA", Edwards said.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump tweeted that he had accepted Pruitt's resignation as EPA chief and lauded Pruitt's "outstanding job" at the helm.
