Mr Davis was responsible for negotiating the UK's European Union withdrawal.

But her spokesman signaled on Monday she would not back down over the "business friendly" agreement, saying May would now focus on moving the Brexit negotiations forward - a step European Union officials and businesses have long called for. Many eurosceptics are angry, saying the agreed strategy betrays her promise for a clean break with the European Union, raising the prospect that some could try to unseat her.

As the flamboyant public face of the Vote Leave campaign, Johnson's departure will deepen the sense of crisis around May, and increase the chances that she could face a vote of no confidence. "The prime minister thanks Boris for his work".

Former MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson has left his role as a special adviser in the Government following the surprise resignation of the Brexit Secretary.

But much of the day-to-day negotiation falls to May's office.

"It is now clearer than ever that Theresa May does not have the authority to negotiate for Britain or deliver a Brexit deal that protects jobs and the economy".

George Freeman, May's former policy chief, said on Twitter that a "no deal" Brexit "just got a lot more likely".

"A very soft Brexit means that we haven't left, we are simply a rule-taker", he said. "That has been their practice throughout the a year ago and I fear, in fact, if anything, this is just the start".

The vast majority of Tory MPs, although far from happy with the current state of May's government, are not yet convinced that the solution is to replace the prime minister.

In a letter to May, Davis said he was not willing to be "a reluctant conscript" to her negotiating stance.

The junior Brexit minister, Steve Baker, also resigned, Downing Street confirmed Monday. There will be pressure on the Government not to make any further concession.

The midnight resignation came as a shock to British politics, exposing May to challenge by Conservative Party members outraged over what they see as her plan to secure a "soft Brexit" that keeps Britain tied to many rules and regulations of the European Union after it leaves the bloc next year.

It won the backing of one other prominent Brexit campaigner.

She also said that Environment Secretary Michael Gove is the favourite to take on the vacant post.

Other Brexit-supporting Conservative MPs have criticized the Chequers deal, saying May's plans offered Brexit in name only.

The resignations dealt yet another blow to the beleaguered leader, just two days after she announced she had finally united her quarrelsome government behind her plan for a divorce deal with the EU.

May is due to meet her lawmakers later on Monday.

So to criticise Friday's plan, ministers would have to resign and immediately give up ministerial staff, salary, and perks including government cars.

On Friday night she appeared to have persuaded hardline Brexiteers in the Cabinet, including Davis, to back her plan.
