Man contracts flesh-eating bacteria while crabbing in NJ

A New Jersey father is fighting for his life after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria infection while crabbing at Matt's Landing in Maurice River. Dilena says doctors blame a bacteria called Vibrio. Photos taken by the family show the discoloration and swelling.

VNF is referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria because the infection results in tissue damage and death.

Perez was rushed to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was quickly admitted into the intensive care unit.

"He is in critical condition", Perez-Dilan told NJ Advance Media. They noticed that all four limbs had begun to swell and change color.

'The infection has spread to his blood.his skin. She now has a rash on her leg, and her leg [had] painful swelling, ' Perez-Dilan said. "You can see it spreading from his feet all the way above his kneecap". His forearms are black in color.

'She got antibiotics right away.

Perez-Dilan said her father is not breathing well but on his own and is only able to slightly move his right arm - yet is in good spirits. The family is now warning others to be mindful. Vibrio is fairly common in seawater, according to state health officials, especially during summer months. "Be careful. The water, as much as we need water, it can be poisonous. That's why they do use boots - people use boots and covers to protect themselves", Perez-Dilan told WPVI.

Perez's immune system was already compromised by Parkinson's Disease. They can be found in the ocean regardless of water quality, said Larry Hajna, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

According to the CDC, most people become infected with the bacteria after eating raw or undercooked shellfish.
