It was 100 years ago in 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to create the RAF, which became the world's first independent air service.

More than 2,200 people packed Westminster Abbey for the service, with dignitaries including Prime Minister Theresa May, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn attending.

Up to 100 aircraft will fly above the county on their way to a flypast over Buckingham Palace to celebrate the RAF's 100th birthday.

The Queen spoken of the remarkable contribution of the RAF over the last 100 years as she stood in the forecourt of the palace.

Seconds before, the largest ever formation of Royal Air Force Typhoons spelt out 100 in the skies above Buckingham Palace to mark the centenary of the service.

He said: "Bringing together that big parade, the new colour and the flypast - this is going to be a tremendous day, and it is about commemorating all of our history, and it is about celebrating what we do today".
