Red State Democrats In Hot Seat Over Trump's Supreme Court Pick

The privilege of naming justices to the U.S. Supreme Court - judges whose decisions could affect the lives of Americans for decades - is one of the most consequential choices a president can make.

And I've been here with Supreme Court justices from the time of President Ford straight on to President Trump.

President Donald Trump pointed before boarding Air Force One at Morristown Municipal Airport, in Morristown, N.J., Sunday, en route to Washington from Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.

"I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh and to the Senate's fair consideration of his nomination, beginning with the work of Chairman Grassley and the Judiciary Committee".

Conservatives will focus on moderate Democrats running for re-election in Trump country, such as Indiana's Joe Donnelly, North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia's Joe Manchin. Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style.

With Democrats determined to vigorously oppose Trump's choice, the Senate confirmation battle is expected to dominate the months leading up to November's midterm elections. When the court he serves on upheld a New Jersey law requiring a gun owner to obtain a permit to carry a gun in public places and to show that he has "a justifiable need" to carry the gun, Hardiman dissented, chastising the majority for upholding a law that dates to 1966 (and arguably 1924) as insufficiently long-standing. Time and time again, the party in control of the Senate and White House saw their selections for powerful positions filibustered by their opponents in the minority. A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right.

To be sure, he acknowledged that "in a very few cases, you may overrule precedent", but he also promised that he would follow Supreme Court precedent about when it is appropriate to overrule a case.

Republicans ignored Obama's nominee and delayed the vote until the 2017 Senate session when it approved Trump's nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, for the Scalia seat.

The Federalist Society does not take legal or policy positions, and members regularly debate the proper approach to health care policy, taxes and other issues, wrote Jonathan Adler, a society member and law professor at Case Western University, for The Washington Post previous year.

Barrett is a socially conservative judge who has drawn considerable attention for her personal religious beliefs, which critics have argued could influence her rulings as a Supreme Court Justice. He is also a George W. Bush appointment to the federal bench. Justice Kennedy devoted his career to securing liberty.

A graduate of Yale and Yale Law, he also was a member of Kenneth Starr's independent counsel team that investigated President Bill Clinton. Jon Kyl of Arizona would guide the nominee through the Senate confirmation process.

Kyl retired from the Senate seat now occupied by Jeff Flake in 2013 and has been working for Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

Casey said he opposes the process by which Trump is picking his judges, which he described as choosing from a list of 25 nominees prepared by conservative organizations such as the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.

With a slim one-vote majority in the Senate, any GOP defections could prove problematic in winning confirmation for Trump's eventual choice - that is, if Democrats hold together in opposition.

"She has made clear - as she said to the president in person two weeks ago - that she considers fully vetting Supreme Court nominees one of the most important jobs of any USA senator, and she plans to fulfill that critical duty", her spokeswoman, Abigail McDonough, said.

Elected officials in NY, including Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Sen.
