The move by Trump raised concerns that others would be encouraged to actively oppose federal control of public land.

Years later, the Hammond case prompted Bundy's sons, Ammon and Ryan, to lead an armed, anti-government militia that took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for a month. Most notably, members of another anti-government family, the Bundys, cited the Hammonds as their inspiration for facing down what they called an oppressive government when they occupied a national wildlife refuge in OR, setting up a weeks-long standoff that became front-page news in 2016. The Hammonds were convicted in 2012 of setting fires that spread on government-managed land near their ranch.

Nelson said he told Justice Department and FBI officials, including then-acting Director Andrew McCabe, about "possible criminal conduct" by some involved FBI Hostage Rescue Team agents. "He can't give them back their life".

"Any decent American ought to be able to see that these family ranchers, so different from politically connected agribusiness, are better and braver than all of us city slickers put together".

The Hammonds were being held at a federal detention center south of Los Angeles. It was unclear when they would be released.

The Hammond family, well-known in eastern OR, had been embroiled for years in a legal dispute over several fires that damaged federal property. Her office appealed the lighter sentences because she said the trial judge didn't have discretion to depart from a mandatory minimum sentence.

Dwight has so far served about three years in prison and Steven has served about four years.

Sanders recounted the series of events that left the 76-year-old and 46-year-old Hammond father and son sentenced to five years each in prison after an "overzealous appeal" under the Obama administration.

"The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West", Trump continued. "Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency".

Their plight prompted Ammon and Ryan Bundy's Citizens for Constitutional Freedom to stage a protest, occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern OR from January 2 to February 11, 2016.

The White House said evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds' responsibility for the fire was "conflicting", and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges.

Aides say that Trump has been especially drawn to cases in which he believes the prosecution may have been politically motivated - a situation that may remind him of his own position at the center of the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian election meddling.

Many people believe the president as sending a signal to former aides and associates caught up in the probe.
