Trump Presses NATO on Defense Spending Ahead of Summit

The European Council President appealed to Mr Trump to remember who his allies are as the USA leader prepares to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "While these countries have been increasing their contributions since I took office, they must do much more", Trump wrote on Twitter.

"The president is going into a situation where most of the countries he will be talking to will not be thinking internationally because they have so many headaches domestically", said Christopher Swift, a national security scholar at Georgetown University. "'And it means a lot more to you than protecting us because I don't know how much protection we get by protecting you'".

In the past few weeks, Trump has sent sharply worded letters to the leaders of several European countries, including Germany, Italy and Norway, as well as to Canada, urging increased defense spending and warning that the US was losing patience. Tusk recalled that the Europeans are spending more than Russian Federation and as much as China on defence.

President Donald Trump said his easiest meeting on his foreign trip to Europe this week may be his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump also vowed not to be "taken advantage" of by the European Union, who he says does not do enough to support the transatlantic alliance and takes unfair advantage of the United States on trade.

This disdain for USA allies is essentially the beating heart of much of Trump's foreign policy, it seems.

Mr Tusk responded to the United States president on Twitter, claiming that the United States won't have "a better ally than EU".

But the one key requirement for Trump at Brussels-full-throated adherence to Article 5-is about the best we can hope for. In March he criticised the USA president's claim that "trade wars are good and easy to win", countering that "they are bad and easy to lose".

"NATO really is making progress, and they are doing it really at President Trump's insistence", Hutchinson said on "Fox News Sunday". This is especially valued now, given their own deep internal divisions, which are magnified by the rot in democratic practice in some countries and the damage being done to security and the future of the European Union and Western security caused by Brexit.

"Getting ready to leave for Europe".

Trump has insisted that he will be "totally prepared" for the meeting with Putin, who on Tuesday he called "a competitor".

Putin complained to Trump about the people who tried to stop the two men from talking, reporter Julie Hirschfeld Davis found.

"Russia should be in this meeting", Trump said in June. "They want to destabilize the strongest defense alliance in the history of the world, and that's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation".
