British Prime Minister Theresa May held what she said was a "productive" meeting of her new cabinet on Tuesday (Jul 10), before being hit by new resignations within her ruling Conservative party over her strategy for leaving the European Union. Inside, the paper's report says May finds herself in a "serious crisis" caused by her "inability" to manage an orderly Brexit.

In a strongly worded resignation letter, he warned that the current Brexit plan meant Britain was "truly headed for the status of colony" and accused the prime minister of "sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them".

However, she has support from moderates and there has been no formal challenge to her leadership so far. "The Prime Minister can't deliver Brexit and has zero authority left".

"Perhaps, one side effect of my departure might be to put a little pressure on the government not to make any other concessions and I will keep arguing to say there is a better way to do it than this", Davis said.

May's proposals for a "common rulebook" on goods "hands control of large swathes of our economy to the EU", he said.

"I'd have to do something I didn't believe in", he told the BBC. Most EU sources I spoke to believe she will.

If 48 Conservative MPs write letters of no confidence to the chair of the backbench 1922 committee, Graham Brady, she would face an immediate vote, but he made clear on Monday night that point had not been reached.

"May is fighting for her survival", Mujtaba Rahman, a managing director at Eurasia Group, said in a research note.

The resignations rocked May in a week that includes a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit starting Wednesday and a United Kingdom visit by U.S. President Donald Trump beginning Thursday.

He added: "The stance of hard-line Brexiteers is revealing, Boris Johnson's resignation letter to Theresa May in itself reveals actually the degree the type of Brexit he wanted was never going to happen, and he was never really dealing with reality".

Top Brexiteer Michael Gove, an ally of Mr Davis, Mr Johnson and also Mrs May, said everybody was "in very good spirits".

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Their resignation prompted a mini-reshuffle, with former health secretary Jeremy Hunt stepping into Mr Johnson's shoes and former housing minister Dominic Raab taking over from Mr Davis.

Seven members of Theresa May's government have resigned since November 2017 - an average of one every six weeks, and approximately one-third of her cabinet. Her spokesman said the cabinet had discussed the publication of a "white paper" policy document on Britain's future ties with the European Union and stepping up preparations for any no-deal outcome to the negotiations with Brussels.

"We welcome the fact that the British cabinet agreed collectively on detailed proposals for the future relationship between the European Union (EU) and Britain on Friday".

Under the Conservative Party's rules, "a confidence vote can not be repeated for another 12 months, so if she survived one, she would have the space to complete the Brexit negotiations", he said.

"I had with David Davis a frank and cordial relationship, and now I will work next Monday with this negotiator appointed by Mrs May", he told AFP.

With less than nine months until Britain is due to leave the EU, May has been wrestling with how to enact Brexit without jeopardizing business with the world's biggest trading bloc of 27 countries whilst forging new global deals.

Boris's resignation letter is scathing.
