Boys Reportedly Now Rescued From Thai Cave Following Second Rescue Operation

Second day of Thailand cave rescue

Soldiers arrive outside the Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 8, 2018.

Narongsak said that the "same multinational team" that went into the cave on Sunday to retrieve the first four boys was deployed on Monday.

Then the problem became how to get them out as more rainy season showers loomed. Four boys and their 25-year-old soccer coach remain deep in the cave, an ordeal that has lasted more than two weeks after they were trapped inside by floods.

The ambulance drove toward a helipad, where a helicopter was seen taking off shortly after to the cheers of the crowd below.

Eight boys in total have been extracted from a cave in Mae Sai after Thai divers resumed operations in the cave rescue at 11am (6 am SAST) on Tuesday, according to global news reports.

The second phase of the rescue effort began on Monday, hours after the first four were pulled to safety late Sunday.

The rescue has been underway ever since and eight of the boys are now out thanks to a team of expert divers.

Authorities have refused to confirm names reported in local media, but in the small town of Mae Sai where the cave is located, it's all anybody is talking about. Thai Navy SEALs and global cave diving experts brought out four boys Sunday, and the operation is continuing today.

The urgent and risky effort has involved the boys diving through the cave's tight and twisting passages, guided by experienced divers. To get the remaining boys out, divers will be forced by the narrow passages to accompany them one at a time.

The boy is part of a group who went into the Tham Luang cave more than two weeks ago.

A total of eight boys were removed from the cave on Sunday and Monday. But the rain largely held off on Monday.

All were taken to a hospital.

The teenagers woke up "hungry" on Monday morning, and asked for pad kra pao - a pork and holy basil stir fry dish - with rice, the rescue chief told a press conference. "We have to quarantine them for a little while due to fear of infection".

Thai officials had said Sunday that they were temporarily suspending the rescue effort so they could replenish oxygen supplies and other gear.

"The next step is to make sure those kids and their families are safe because living in a cave has a different environment which might contains animals that could transmit any disease", a hospital statement said. He said the mission would resume within "10 to 20 hours". Visitors would need to wear sanitized clothes and stay two meters away from the children.

It's a process that can take several hours.

Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the first four boys rescued. Two other boys came out at 7:40 p.m. and 7:50 p.m.

Shortly after, ambulances were seen racing toward the nearby city of Chiang Rai down roads that had been cleared of traffic to smooth the journey.

Onlookers watch and cheer during the rescue operation.

A retired Thai navy SEAL died Friday after he ran out of oxygen while placing compressed-air tanks along the exit route.

Among those are United States military partners, British cave diving experts - including the two men who first located the boys a week ago - and rescue workers from Australia, China and other countries.
