Broadband speeds rise in developed markets but United Kingdom drops in ranking

UK slips to 35th place in World Broadband Speed League

In the 2018 Worldwide Broadband Speed League the United Kingdom has slipped from 31 (2017) to 35 place.

This news comes courtesy of Cable.co.uk who compiled data collected by M-Lab: a partnership between New America's Open Technology Institute, Google Open Source Research, Princeton University's PlanetLab, and others.

Overall, 136 countries failed to achieve average speeds above 10Mbps, a speed deemed by telecoms watchdog Ofcom to be the minimum required to cope with the needs of a typical family or small business. In contrast, Yemen was again in last place with a 0.31Mbps average. As well as the headlining slippage in the UK's world ranking, it was revealed that the UK's average internet connection speed is 18.57Mbps.

Earlier this year the United Kingdom government declared it had delivered on its promise to extend "superfast" broadband to 95% of homes - but the company that compiled the data claimed Britain was likely to fall further behind other countries over the coming years.

So why the decrease in ranking when our average speed increased?

Global broadband average speed rose from 7.4Mbps to 9.1Mbps in the 12 months to the end of May, up 23%.

Some 36 of the top 50 countries are in Europe, with nine in the Asia Pacifica region, two in North America, two in Latin America and one in Africa.

"It's been very interesting looking at the data for a second year running, not least because we have three times as much of it this time around". It is, however, somewhat sad to see the United Kingdom not faring better.

"A number of other countries have leapfrogged us since past year, including France and Madagascar", he said.

"Compared with many other countries both in and out of Europe, the United Kingdom has simply come too late to a full-fibre solution. Despite plans to roll out FTTP to United Kingdom homes across the next decade or so, the United Kingdom is likely to fall further behind while we wait". The government? Whoever is in charge of this sort of thing should take note. Britain is falling behind, and we need to keep up with the rest of Europe. Whether that means improving connections, making faster connections more affordable, or something I haven't thought of. This put it in 35th place, down four from last year's league table. This cannot stand. Cable.co.uk emailed HEXUS with its latest survey findings which are derived from over 163 million broadband speed tests worldwide.
