Cave rescue: The dramatic mission to save boys in pictures

Thai soldiers prepare for the second day of an operation to bring football team out of Tham Luang cave complex

"And we will do it faster because we are afraid of the rain".

Rescuers pulled four more members of a Thailand boys soccer team from a cave where the team has been stranded for two weeks.

Authorities spent hours replenishing air tanks along the cave's treacherous exit route. The families have not yet been able to interact with the boys out of fears of infection. The delivery announcement comes on the second day of an operation to remove the boys.

Each rescue operation takes around 10 hours.

Eight more boys and their coach need to be removed from the cave, and the rescue has resumed, CNN reports. The four evacuated on Monday were also hospitalized, although their condition was not announced.

Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said at a press conference on Monday that the effort would involve the same divers. Sunday's mission took nine hours and plenty of energy, with each child being accompanied by two divers along the way.

The rescue of the remaining boys and their football coach is being carried out by trained divers who are helping them through the flooded cave network. It is a race against the clock with heavy rain expected in coming days, which would again dangerously flood the tunnels. Some are not even strong swimmers, and have had to learn to dive in conditions that claimed the life of a former Thai Navy SEAL on Friday.

Officials said on Sunday that it may "take days" to rescue all 12 boys and their coach.

"Living in a cave has a different environment, which might contain animals that could transmit any disease", they said.

How are the boys being rescued?

The potential for rising water and the dwindling oxygen levels added to the urgency of getting the team out.

The rescued children have been complaining they are hungry and demanding fried rice, Narongsak Osottanakorn, the head of the rescue operation told reporters.

A video published by the Thai PBS channel earlier on Monday also showed a person on a stretcher - most likely the first boy to be rescued on Monday - being transferred to a helicopter.

The boys and their coach went exploring in the massive cave on June 23 after a soccer practice, and were cut off when a rainstorm flooded the cave.

But with oxygen levels inside dropping to risky lows and the prospect of heavy rains flooding the area completely, authorities decided they had to move quickly and take the group out through the water-filled tunnels.

Here are some pictures of the dramatic mission captivating Thailand and the world.

Dozens of foreign divers and other experts from around the world were brought in to help the rescue effort, working alongside Thai Navy Seals.

Thailand cave rescue: How did they get trapped?

All preparations, including replacing the oxygen cylinders positioned along the route out in the cave, take at least 20 hours, he said.

Shortly after, ambulances were seen racing toward the nearby city of Chiang Rai down roads that had been cleared of traffic to smooth the journey. However, it is unclear if the device is part of any current rescue plans.

The rescue began on Sunday. "Very fearless and talented people!"
