How Gareth Southgate's 'lucky socks' got him the boot from Middlesbrough

One of the most recognisable statues in Leeds city centre is now proudly showing its support for Gareth Southgate and his team ahead of their huge World Cup semi-final clash against Croatia.

However, ahead of England v Croatia tonight, I can't disagree this time.

England have progressed to their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years, but Croatia defender Dejan Lovren - who plays his club football in England - says he is not paying attention to the World Cup fever that has swept the country. "All of my friends are England supporters and, seeing as I'm likely the only Croatian they know, they've all called me out to wish me good luck for the semi-final!"

They return to Moscow for the game against Croatia, having played in the Russian capital in the last 16 against Colombia, albeit at the smaller Spartak Stadium.

England have been rewriting history in Russian Federation, and Southgate is hoping there will be more to come as they play their most important World Cup game since losing to West Germany on penalties in the semi-finals of Italia '90.

She added that she is flying back to Croatia and would be watching the game as part of a joint birthday football celebration.

He predicts England will win 2-1 but only after extra-time, that would be a tough one to experience and a similarly comfortable 2-0 victory, like the one over Sweden, would be much more preferable.

Steve, who was at the 1982, 1990 and 1998 World Cups as a member of the media, picks up the story: "Twenty years ago in 1998 I got involved with Statto (Angus Loughran) from (Frank) Skinner and (David) Baddiel's Fantasy Football, which was all the rage at that time", he said.

"Whether we win or lose, we're creating history", he said.

"I just have a feeling that England will find a way to win".

England are Croatia's opponents in the final four of the tournament as they bid to reach their first final. They'll have to be hugely proud of the team and they must think that they can beat us.
