Instagram Model Katarina Zarutskie Savaged by Shark During Bahamas Vacation

A 19-year-old college student and Instagram model was posing for a bird's-eye water photo in the Bahamas when a shark bit her on the wrist, BuzzFeed News reports.

"It was a humbling experience and I've learned a lot", she said.

The model chose to keep calm despite having just been set upon, and raised her arm from the water so the blood wouldn't attract more sharks.

"When he bit me, supposedly it sounded like a big vacuum seal sort of sound", she recalled.

Nurse sharks are commonly thought to be harmless to humans, but they will bite defensively if they are bothered by divers.

With her boyfriend's dad on photographer duty, she got in the water and took a series of photos.

Zarutskie told Fox News she didn't see a sign where she entered and would have never went in the water if they were feeding the sharks.

"Against my boyfriend's wishes and his parents wishes". She did not swim with the sharks through a tour company or any organization that required payment, but, having grown up as a surfer in Southern California, she said she was not afraid to jump in the water near a marina. She added the locals were "very encouraging" in telling her to try the activity.

"Sharks are wonderful creatures and attractive but you really need to respect them in their home and maybe not lean back, " she told the Miami ABC affiliate. Zarutskie was able to break free and swim to the shore.

Zarutskie told NBC that she was pulled under briefly when the reportedly five-foot shark chose to take a chomp on her arm then she "ripped [her] wrist out of the shark's mouth as fast as I could". She had to get several stitches and was put on a round of antibiotics.
