Todd Phillips is set to direct the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver while The Wolf of Wall Street producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff is on board with Richard Baratta serving as executive producer.

According to THR, Warner still developing another Joker project starring Leto. Phoenix's movie is getting fast-tracked and could even be ready for a 2019 release if Warner Bros. plays its cards right.

Warner Bros. describes the movie, per THR, as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale". Shooting reportedly starts in September in NY. It's being compared to a crime drama.

Variety first reported that Phoenix was in talks to play the Clown Prince of Crime. In recent months, Josh Brolin's Thanos took the crown for most loved villain, but before the Mad Titan hit movie screens, the Joker was king.

Phoenix's Joker however will be a separate standalone interpretation on the character, which isn't connected to the DC universe depicted in Justice League and Suicide Squad.

$55 million is not very much for a film that will be part of a superhero franchise, possibly leading to something quite interesting with the finished product. Joker fatigue is a possibility for audiences, but it depends on how the films differentiate from each other, and when each one arrives in theaters.
