Former foreign secretary Lord Carrington has died at the age of 99.

"He was a much loved and widely respected member of the House of Lords for almost eight decades, and served with great honour and integrity in Government as foreign secretary, defence secretary, leader of the House of Lords, chairman of the Conservative Party and much more besides".

He went on to hold several of the top positions in British politics, including defence secretary and foreign secretary.

He was also the last surviving member of Winton Churchill's post World War II government.

Prime Minister Theresa May's office said his death was "very sad news".

"He was a much loved and widely respected member of the House of Lords for almost eight decades, and served with great honour and integrity in government".

Peter Carrington, a long-serving British politician who was the last survivor of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's government, has died.

"His career was given to public service".

And David Lidington, the MP for Lord Carrington's constituency, said: "His career was given to public service".

The Conservative peer is best-known for resigning as foreign secretary three days after Argentina's shock invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982.

In his autobiography Lord Carrington wrote that "despite the impossibility of his behaviour" Mintoff was "a genuine patriot". The person to purge it should be the minister in charge.

Lord Peter Carrington played a key role in establishing the modern state of Zimbabwe, chairing the Lancaster House talks in 1979 which led to its creation from what was formerly southern Rhodesia.

"These were qualities that he also brought to bear as a highly esteemed Secretary General of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - and, in the week of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, I know that my fellow leaders will join me in offering our gratitude for his lifetime of service and our deepest condolences to his family".
