Ex Chelsea and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has completed a move to Japanese club Sagan Tosu after leaving Spanish club Atletico Madrid at the end of last La Liga season.

The 34-year-old has announced via his official Twitter account that he is joining Japanese first division side Sagan Tosu, who are now 17 in the division.

But the prolific marksman has rejected the opportunity to continue plying his trade on European soil and chose to cut his teeth in the Japan Professional Football League with relegation strugglers Sagan Tosu. There were many options, different offers from all the continents.

He said he planned to make his debut for Sagan Tosu on July 22.

Torres, who won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2010 European Championships with Spain, scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for his country and struck 118 times in two spells at Atletico.

At his grand Sagan unveiling on Tuesday morning, Torres held aloft a scarf which, according to our favourite J-League shaman, journalist Dan Orlowitz, read "This isn't a false report!" - a reference to the premature announcement of the transfer posted (then hastily deleted and apologised for) on the league's official website back in May. In 2017, they finished eighth in the division but are in a relegation battle halfway through the current campaign.

Torres added: "I've always been treated really well in Asia and Sagan Tosu have made a great effort and I'm very grateful".

Former Spain teammate Andres Iniesta, who joined Vissel Kobe from Barcelona, will also be playing in the J-League and Torres said that meant he would already have a good friend in the competition.
