Anderson into Wimbledon final after second longest ever Grand Slam singles match

American Isner reaches 1st Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon

It was the longest men's semifinal in Wimbledon history at six hours and 36 minutes.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson will square-off against John Isner.

A showdown between two tennis skyscrapers - with Isner topping the 6 foot 8 Anderson by two inches - predictably featured three tiebreaks and 102 thunderbolt aces but it was the 32-year-old South African who delivered the knockout blow.

Anderson took a medical timeout after the third set. The two went back and forth all the way to 12-all, essentially playing a full sixth and seventh set.

The fifth set got off to a quick start but then turned into a marathon. Anderson won the opening set before Isner bounced back to take the next two.

There was some fear that the match would be stopped when rain began to fall in the fifth, and the grounds crew sprung into position, but play continued.

Reflecting on the battle, Isner said, "There could be a little mental aspect in our match". Isner was serving first, with Anderson then having to hold each time in order to stay alive in the match.

Anderson is trying to follow up his five-set win over Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, with both men appearing in their first semifinal at the All England Club.

The match has surpassed the previous record of 4 hours, 44 minutes when the score was tied 9-9 in the deciding set.

Isner was famously apart of the longest match in tennis history.

Anderson had already played in the Grand Slam final when he lost to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon a year ago and John is in the semis for the first time, playing a great tennis in the last 12 days and never losing serve in 95 service games!
