Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ Movie Lands Director Cate Shortland

Scarlett Johansson will team up with writer/director Cate Shortland for her stand-alone Black Widow movie.

THR goes on to say that Shortland beat out over 70 other candidates for the gig, including Amma Asante (Belle), Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry).

The Australian director made her name with her unbelievable 2004 debut Summersault, and her most recent movie - kidnap thriller Berlin Syndrome - was one of our hidden gems of 2017.

The Black Widow solo movie has found its director.

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker best known for the post-World War II drama Lore, will helm the feature starring Scarlett Johansson as Nathasha Romanoff, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Although the studio initially meant to hire a female filmmaker, the Hollywood trade says the Disney-owned studio "stalled at one point and the studio looked at male directors".

Johansson is poised to reprise the role of the Black Widow for the much-anticipated standalone movie, and the 33-year-old has previously spoken enthusiastically about the prospect of Black Widow being handed her own film. The character has a tortured past, she's had to make a lot of hard decisions.

The film has been in development for awhile, but picked up momentum in January when Jac Schaeffer was tapped to pen the script. Kevin Feige is producing the pic.

Fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow solo film ever since the character made her big-screen debut in 2010's Iron Man 2.
