Brexit plan that split the Tory party to be unveiled later today

But Trump threw cold water on that prospect in his Sun interview, saying: "If they do a deal like [May's plan], we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the United Kingdom, so it will probably kill the deal".

The Prime Minister managed to reach a final Cabinet position surrounding the Government's trade policy and desired post-Brexit customs arrangement with the European Union, and crystallised her policy in the Brexit White Paper.

May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan would keep Britain in a free trade zone for goods with the European Union but mean it had to accept some European Union rules.

Trump said that the tenor in London is part of why he's spending so little time in the city, saying, "I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London". "I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the terrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in".

Asked if he could become prime minister he added: "Well I am not pitting one against the other". He lashed out again at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and resumed his feud with London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Claiming Khan has done a "very bad job on terrorism", as well as on crime.

But for many British diplomats, Brexit marks the collapse of a 70-year British strategy of trying to balance European integration with a US alliance based on blood, trade and intelligence sharing.

"I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the frightful things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in", Trump said of Khan.

Trump also had harsh words for current London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a fervent critic of the president, saying Khan "has done a awful job" running Europe's third-largest city. Scottish police, however, said that the balloon could not fly over the Turnberry golf club Trump owns on the west coast of the country.

"Theresa May has invited President Trump to our country at a time when his risky and inhumane policies are putting the lives and wellbeing of millions of people at risk", he said. Hundreds of protesters descended on the castle to voice their opposition to the president's visit.

Donald Trump delivered a snub to his host Theresa May, who hours before had laid on a prestigious dinner for the United States president at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill. Although Trump has said this practice will be stopped, thousands of children remain separated from their parents and face great difficulty locating their relatives.

The Trumps were driven from their helicopter in the armoured presidential limousine, nicknamed The Beast, to the red carpet awaiting them.

Of Johnson, he said: "I have a lot of respect for Boris".

Theresa May and her husband Philip greet Donald Trump and his wife Melania at Blenheim Palace. He then reminded the press that his mother was from Scotland.

Mr Trump sparked controversy before he had even touched down at Stansted Airport, Essex, for his four day "working visit" by attacking Downing Street's handling of the Brexit negotiations.

Writing in the Evening Standard newspaper, Khan said, "The planned protests are not anti-American but to show that we support hope, unity, tolerance and equality".

"He is destroying all the norms of what used to be a great democracy in America and so I'm really concerned about my country and I'm here now and so this is where I have the chance to protest him".

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the Chequers agreement was created to be a "credible offer" to Brussels to allow negotiations to make progress.

The government also appeared to recognise public concerns that Brexit negotiations need to start in earnest very soon in order for there to be no data "cliff edge", saying it was "ready to begin preliminary discussions on an adequacy assessment so that a data protection agreement is in place by the end of the implementation period at the latest".
