Ferrari says Mercedes 'should be ashamed' after British GP comments

Brendon Hartley suffers a terrifying suspension failure in final practice

Lewis Hamilton has accepted Kimi Raikkonen's apology for causing their opening-lap contact at the British Grand Prix, and has retracted comments made in the immediate aftermath.

Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari collided with the Mercedes of Hamilton on the first lap, which caused the Briton's vehicle to spin before rejoining the race in last place.

In third place Raikkonen with 116 points.

This was a race that, on paper, had Hamilton's name written all over it and should have sent the Briton back to the top of the standings.

The stewards had no trouble in declaring Raikkonen as the guilty party.

Finland's Raikkonen, who was handed a 10-second penalty before finishing third, admitted he had made a mistake, while Vettel said it is "quite silly" to think there was anything deliberate.

When the safety auto was deployed following Marcus Ericsson's crash, Mercedes elected to leave both drivers out, thereby handing Valtteri Bottas the lead - and track position - over Vettel, while at the same time allowing Hamilton to get ahead of Raikkonen and Max Verstappen.

With this victory, Vettel has assumed the lead in the championship.

Hamilton added: "All I would say is that it's two races in which a Ferrari has taken out a Mercedes".

Vettel he admitted he feared he would miss qualifying with a neck complaint, and though he went on to earn second on the grid he confessed to still being a little anxious going into the race.

"It is a lot of points that Valtteri and I have lost in those two scenarios".

Wolff said: "In James Allison's words, 'do you think it is deliberate or incompetence?'".

"We'll take it on the chin and keep pushing hard, because believe me I will not give up".

"I lost almost 3kg [in body fluids] trying to get back to the top for you and my team", he said, addressing his 6.7 million followers on the social media platform. "There wasn't any intention and I find it unnecessary to go there".

And despite his breathless comeback, Hamilton was visibly furious with Raikkonen's behaviour. The Englishman broke protocol by refusing to be interviewed after the race and headed straight for the podium green room. I sweat my arse off in that race. "I gave it 1000 per cent and I didn't have any energy at the end", said Hamilton. I didn't have anything left when I came in.

"People expect you to get out of the vehicle and wave and smile".

"If you can't understand and appreciate that, then I fully understand". It's so physical nowadays. Everybody brings updates to every race and there is never a silver bullet that provides you three tenths or four tenths, which was the difference between us and Ferrari past year.
