Just five years after the launch of its first original series, "House of Cards", Netflix ended HBO's 17-year streak as the most Emmy-nominated network.

Its nominated shows include sci-fi drama Stranger Things, fictionalised royal biopic The Crown, comedy GLOW and western Godless.

The most star-studded category, as is often the case, was best actor in a limited series or TV movie, where Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Legend and Jeff Daniels all picked up nominations.

Game of Thrones' roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in 'The Handmaid's Tale, ' last year's top drama series. "Game of Thrones" helped boost the premium cable service's total and became the most-nominated series of all time, with its 129 nods topping the 124 nominations earned by "ER".

In the comedy categories, hip-hop-themed FX show "Atlanta" is up against Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel", ABC's "black-ish", female wrestling show "GLOW", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", quirky comedy "Barry", tech comedy "Silicon Valley" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". It was a deep year of nominations for minority performers, who accounted for over one-third of Thursday's acting nominees.
