Papa John's founder resigns as chairman after apologizing for racial slur

Major League Baseball axed its "Papa Slam" promotion earlier this week; the University of Louisville announced it's working to rename Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

The pizza chain is removing John Schnatter's face from its marketing materials, two days after he admitted to using the N-word during a company conference call.

Bendapudi also explained she spoke with Schnatter, who supported the decision to remove the name so it won't be a distraction to the program, according to 93.9 The Ville.

Papa John's got a taste of that a year ago, when Schnatter stepped down as CEO after blaming disappointing pizza sales on the outcry surrounding football players kneeling during the national anthem. The company also confirmed that it has no plans to rename the brand.

The deals last through 2040 and include no "morals" clauses that would allow the university to change the stadium's over Schnatter's objection in light of his comments and negative publicity.

Schnatter submitted his resignation Wednesday as a member of the university's board of trustees after Louisville National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) called for Schnatter to either step down or be removed from the board, according to the Courier-Journal. Schnatter released a statement Wednesday apologizing, which said in part, "Regardless of the context, I apologize".

"We understand that this comes with certain consequences and we have examined all of those, and this is our best decision to move forward", Bendapudi said.

The contract states that there are a few ways for the stadium's name to change, both relying on action from Schnatter. That prompted the company's stock to recover some of the losses it suffered after the report, and shares climbed another 3 percent Friday. Papa John's is now scrubbing Schnatter's image from its packaging and marketing materials.

Papa John's is the world's third-largest pizza chain, with more than 350 outlets in the United Kingdom and 4,900 restaurants worldwide.

While the stadium bore the name of the pizza company, the naming rights deal was with Schnatter himself instead of the company.
