A black rhino. Seven have died in unclear circumstances at the Tsavo East National Park

In moving the rhinos to Tsavo East National Park last month, the Kenya Wildlife Service said it hoped to boost the population there.

Preliminary investigations suggest the rhinos suffered from salt poisoning as they adapted to water with higher saline levels than they were accustomed to, according to tourism and wildlife minister Najib Balala.

The relocation of the rhinos involves putting the animals to sleep and then reviving them when they arrive at their new location, according to The Guardian.

The three remaining rhinos are being monitored and given fresh water in pans, the ministry said.

Paula Kahumba, of WildlifeDirect, called it "a complete disaster" and said officials must explain what went wrong.

'Something must have gone wrong, and we want to know what it is'.

The termed the incident as unfortunate affirming that disciplinary action will be taken, if the findings point towards negligence or unprofessional misconduct on the part of any KWS officers.

14 black rhinos were moved in all.

'Rhino translocations also have major welfare considerations and I dread to think of the suffering that these poor animals endured before they died'.

Seven endanger black rhinos died last month in Kenya after being moved between national parks.

With a goal of bringing them back, Dean said Kenya aims to increase the number of black rhinos by 2,000.

It is a process that the World Wide Fund, which runs the programme with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), described as "extremely challenging and not without risk" in a statement released to Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper.

The black was on the brink of extinction after a dramatic 98 percent decline in population from 20,000 in 1970 to about 350 in 1983, says WWF.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, nine rhinos were killed in Kenya previous year.

In May, three more were shot dead inside a specially-protected sanctuary in northern Kenya and their horns removed, while in March the last male northern white rhino on earth, an elderly bull named Sudan, was put down by Kenyan vets after falling ill.

The decline was caused by escalating illegal poaching for illegal markets in the Middle East and Asia. The white rhino is a near threatened species.
