Ex-GOP lawmaker: Strzok hearing 'was a humiliating day' for Republicans

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok prepares to testify on Thursday

In Washington, D.C., it was 10 hours of fireworks in Congress as Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok faced off with House Republican lawmakers Thursday during a hearing convened by the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees.

The congressional hearing with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok went off the rails Thursday afternoon, and Rep. Stephen Lynch, somehow, got caught in the subsequent social media crossfire. Strzok has since been reassigned within the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I understand we are living in a political era in which insults and insinuation often drown out honesty and integrity", Strzok said, continuing: "I have the utmost respect for Congress' oversight role, but I truly believe that today's hearing is just another victory notch in Putin's belt and another milestone in our enemies' campaign to tear America apart".

Throughout the hearing, Strzok denied that any of his animus toward Trump affected his work, and said lawmakers were taking his words out of context.

Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee says Republican attacks on the anti-Trump FBI agent are an attempt to undermine the Russian collusion investigation. He was removed from special counsel Robert Mueller's team following the discovery of the derogatory text messages previous year, exchanged with an Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer he was having an affair with.

Strzok later replied that he has "always told the truth".

Strzok tried to respond, but Gohmert cut him off, insisting that he was not allowed to answer due to hearing rules that the witness could only respond if a representative asked a direct question. "As someone who loves this country and cherishes its ideals, it is profoundly painful to watch and even worse to play a part in".

The hearing lasted five hours and may resume on Monday.

In the prepared remarks, Strzok acknowledges that while his text message criticism was "blunt", it was not directed at one person or political party, and included jabs not only at Trump, but also at Clinton as well as Sen. Strzok was removed from the special counsel probe after the text messages were discovered a year ago, while Page had already left.

Strzok is testifying publicly on Capitol Hill for the first time since the release of a Justice Department inspector general report that heavily criticized his comments. Strzok helped lead the FBI's early investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race and Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. However, what he tweeted early this morning, might just take the cake for the most freakish comment he has made recently.

Republicans, on the other hand, peppered Strzok with questions and expressed outrage that's been building for months.
