Earth's mightiest Saiyan Goku is set to return to US and Canadian theaters with today's announcement that Funimation Films has acquired the theatrical rights to the new Dragon Ball Super movie, entitled Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

"We are excited to be partnering with Toei Animation and Twentieth Century Fox on the theatrical release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, " said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of Funimation in a press release.

Theatrical dates for the film's run will be announced later on. As part of the theatrical marketing for the movie, Funimation has become a sponsor for the Dragon Ball North America Tour 2018. But some of that uncertainty may be put to rest thanks to this new story-aptly dubbed Dragon Ball Super: Broly-by franchise creator, Akira Toriyama. The upcoming tour will encompass a total of seven cities in the US and Canada.

When the first Dragon Ball Super movie hits theaters later this year, it will bring with it a villain fans haven't seen in quite a while.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly follows the events of the anime series Dragon Ball Super. Toriyama went on to say that although he rewatched the original Broly movies in preparation for the project, he will be reimagining the character for the Dragon Ball Super continuity. North American fans won't have to wait long to see the epic big-screen Broly brawl in theaters, because Funimation announced plans to screen the movie throughout the United States and Canada in January 2019. The last anime Dragon Ball was Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection "F", which grossed $8 million in North America and became the first independent film to make the top 10 list of highest grossing anime films domestically.

Funimation will also have the distribution rights for home release and streaming.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly will also explore the origins of the Saiyan race, but most of the story details are still under wraps.
