Liverpool are close to completing a deal to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City, with the Swiss worldwide set to have a medical today.

Shaqiri completed his £13m move to Anfield on Friday, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2023.

Xherdan Shaqiri's medical ahead of a move to Liverpool from Stoke is still ongoing and progressing well, Sky Sports News understands.

Salah arrived after Shaqiri had departed, but the Egypt worldwide will be a familiar face for the 26-year-old, as well as a rival for a place in the team.

Shaqiri has been starring at the World Cup this summer but couldn't stop Switzerland from losing to Sweden in the last 16.

So I'm really glad and happy to be here.

Shaqiri also generated interest from Serie A with Lazio keen on signing him, but the player chose to continue playing his football in England and vouched for a move to Liverpool.

"A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn't happen". I'm really happy I'm finally here.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: "I think the English phrase to explain the decision to sign Xherdan is a "no-brainer". Players are always sad when they don't win trophies but hopefully we can do it this year".

"I know the coach from Germany, when he was at Dortmund".

Shaqiri joined Stoke in 2015 from Inter Milan before going on to make 84 league appearances for the club.

After beginning his career with Swiss club Basel, Shaqiri won two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League during a three-year stay with German champions Bayern Munich, before an unsuccessful seven-month stay in Serie A.
