Trump said he wanted "peace all over the world, that's my goal", and he wanted to achieve this by building up the military, with his dream to have the best military equipment in the world and never have to use it.

After Trump spoke, French President Emmanuel Macron said nothing had changed from NATO's earlier commitment, despite Trump's claims. "It's very detailed", Macron said, according to France 24.

Voters in Europe's richest country are divided on the issue, a poll for Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper showed on Friday, with 45 percent wanting Germany to reach the 2 percent target and 49 percent against. Describing the dynamics of the talks, he said, "I was using the term a lot today: burden-sharing".

U.S. President Donald Trump, flanked by national security adviser John Bolton, speaks to the media Thursday at a news conference on the second day of the 2018 NATO Summit in Brussels. Of the alliance, he said it was "very unified, very strong, no problem".

"I strongly believe that every individual who helped carry it out - foreign or domestic - should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law", she said. I don't. I'm very consistent.

Referring to an ongoing investigation into ties between his election campaign and Russian Federation, he decried a "rigged witch-hunt" that was hurting the United States and its relationship with Russian Federation.

Asked if he could accept Russia's annexation with Crimea and still get along with Putin, he said, 'When it comes to Crimea, there's nothing much I have to say about it other than we will look at that just like I'm looking at many disasters that I've taken over'.

Mr Trump has long complained that European countries do not spend enough on their own defence, leaving the USA to shoulder an unfair burden for protecting the continent. "I would like to see that hit that level". He said that he expected the pressure to increase defence spending to continue.

Trump had spent his time in Brussels berating members of the military alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defence, accusing Europe of freeloading off the USA and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defence if they were attacked.

Trump added that although he did not know Putin very well, he hoped that one day he might become friends with him.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Friday announced charges against 12 Russian intelligence officers in connection with the hacking of Democratic Party institutions and Hillary Clinton's campaign before the 2016 presidential election. I mean, it's one of those things. Trump called it "a fantastic meeting", speaking at a news conference Thursday before flying to Britain.

"I think it's fine", Trump said when asked about the protests.

In the latest example of his penchant for creating conflict to draw attention to his agenda, he first demanded an emergency meeting to address his grievances and then called a news conference to claim "total credit" for having pressed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members into increasing their military budgets "like they never have before".

As well as Merkel, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Charles Michel, the prime minister of Belgium, were singled out by Trump for undershooting on their spending targets when US taxpayers, funding a defence budget worth about 3.6 percent of their national income, foot much of NATO's bills.
