Smoking ban in all public housing takes effect nationwide

The ban includes cigarettes, pipes, cigars and water pipe tobacco (hookahs).

Residents will no longer be allowed to light up inside any public housing unit.

People who smoke are still allowed to rent units, but as part of the policy, no smoking will be allowed inside any public housing buildings or within 25 feet of those buildings.

- To enforce a new U.S. Housing and Urban Development rule that bans smoking in public housing, the New York City Housing Authority announced its comprehensive smoke-free policy.

The ban was passed under the Obama administration in November 2016. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have not been banned but may be in the future.

"Eliminating smoking indoors and close to the building is the only way to fully protect people from secondhand smoke". HUD wants to reduce exposure to risky secondhand smoke, and encourage its tenants to drop the carcinogenic habit.

Starting Tuesday, all public housing facilities across the country must have a smoke-free policy in place. Tenants with repeated violations could be evicted, according to HUD's website.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also estimated in 2014 that the new ban is expected yield $153 million per year in savings for government housing agencies in health-care costs and repairs.

The American Lung Association in OH says the ruling will protect close to two million Americans nationwide from being exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, including 690,000 children.
