Newcastle United 'close to signing Salomon Rondon'

Yoshinori Muto has signed for Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur travel to St James Park for the season opener against Newcastle next weekend in a game which will be televised live on Sky Sports.

The news comes as the latest in a string of transfer nightmares for Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez, who continues to be neglected in terms of backing from owner Mike Ashley.

According to a report from BBC Sport, Newcastle are close to sign West Brom striker Salomon Rondon and a deal for the Venezuelan could be agreed by the end of the weekend.

Benitez then said of Newcastle's fans: "They have to be concerned". "We can talk [he and Charnley] and be close [to making signings] but after we are not so close", he said.

He also said he thought the club needed "three or four more players".

Despite Benitez's complaints, Newcastle yesterday announced the £9.5 million signing of striker Yoshinori Muto from Bundesliga side Mainz.

Muto is Newcastle's fifth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng and Fabian Schaer on permanent deals and the loan capture of Kenedy.

Rondon's £16m release clause has now expired, so a potential player-plus-cash deal is on the cards between the two clubs.

While Benitez is disappointed to have lost a key ally in his former press officer Wendy Taylor, who has joined the Football Association where she will work alongside Phil Neville and the England women's team, he hopes to keep his captain and centre-half Jamaal Lascelles who is interesting Everton. "He was right last season - you had more than enough".
