He and the rest of the government escaped unharmed in what Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said was an "attack" against the leftist leader.

He added that "several" drones loaded with explosive charges "detonated near the presidential platform".

Mr Rodriguez said the injured soldiers were being treated in hospitals while the president was meeting his ministers and military commanders.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maruro survived an apparent assassination attempt on Saturday, according to reports. The camera then cuts to the scene on the street, where soldiers and others in the crowd are seen running away from what may have been an explosion.

A televised speech by President Nicolás Maduro was abruptly cut off Saturday, and military men were shown on air running from what the government called a "failed attack" against the president that left seven soldiers wounded.

His wife, Cilia Flores, was standing next to him on a stage and could be seen on state television wincing and looking up after the sound.

Mr Maduro was giving a speech in the capital of Caracas during a celebration of the National Guard's 81st anniversary.

"We are going to bet for the good of our country", Maduro declared triumphantly. The image was quickly changed to lines of military men in formation in the center of Caracas, who seconds later all ran to one side.

Venezuela is living under the fifth year of a severe economic crisis that has sparked malnutrition, hyperinflation and mass emigration.
