Pence Will Reveal Trump's'Space Force Plan Today Watch It Live

The debate is over.

President Donald Trump has called for a "separate but equal" space force.

The Defense Department will establish a sixth branch of the armed forces, the U.S. Department of the Space Force, by 2020, Vice President Mike Pence announced today. "Next February in the president's budget, we will call on the Congress to marshal the resources we need to stand up".

Mr Trump "knows that space is integral to our American way of life and economic prosperity and is a vital domain for national defence" while, under his direction, the USA is "reclaiming its heritage as the world's greatest space-faring nation", the White House said. "Space is essential to the nation's security and prosperity".

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel posted a Space Force recruitment video that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with the message, "Enlist in the #SpaceForce NOW! And in the realm of outer space, the United States Space Force will be that strength". The report was to be released last week by Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan but the White House asked for last minute revisions.

The document outlines how America's military is at risk in space due to adversaries pursuing "counter-space" capabilities to neutralize America's satellites during a conflict, such as by jamming or hacking them. Senior Pentagon officials opposed the measure, and the plan was shelved.

Vice President Mike Pence is rallying support for the Trump administration's push to develop a the Space Force.

Pence discussed actions China and Russian Federation have taken to militarize the space domain, and how Space Force will meet those challenge. Things could get contentious on Capitol Hill as the Space Force issue has taken a more partisan tone.

The Republicans face a battle to hang on to control of the Senate and House of Representatives in November's mid-term elections.

Without any new legislation and using existing authorities, DoD will establish several of the component parts of the Space Force.

The U.S. military now has 77 satellites in orbit that could be vulnerable to potential attack from adversaries like Russian Federation and China that have taken aggressive postures in space. The proposal would also need Congressional approval. Pence said the administration will create a single civilian position reporting to the secretary of defense to oversee the growth and expansion of the new branch.

Hawaii senator Brian Schatz branded the Space Force a "silly but unsafe idea" as he instead urged the expansion of the "Medicaid" health programme.

Congress' most ardent proponents of a separate service for space commended Pence's remarks.

In addition to a Space Operations Command, Pence described plans for a Space Development Agency that would harness innovation in the field and deter bureaucratic drag. "But we built that architecture in space at a time when it was benign".
