In a subsequent statement, Hamas held Israel responsible for the death of the two fighters, with group spokesman Fawzi Barhoum warning Israel that it would "pay the price" for Tuesday's attack.

The incident is expected to shatter efforts by Egypt and the United Nations to reach a long term truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. It then cuts to footage of a shell hitting the post and an explosion.

The Islamist group's military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed in a statement that the dead men were its fighters, naming them as Ahmed Murjan and Abdel-Hafez al-Silawi.

"The resistance can not allow the occupation to impose a policy of bombing sites and targeting fighters without paying the price", a Hamas statement said.

In the past four months, there has been an upsurge in violence along the Gaza-Israel border. At least 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including at least 120 in protests near the border fence. No Israeli soldiers were injured in the Hamas attack.

On August 5th, the day before the report was published, 17-year-old Ahmad Jihad Ahmad al-Aydi from Gaza succumbed to wounds he had sustained on the first day of Great March of Return protests on March 30th.
