Gretchen Whitmer has won the Democratic nomination for MI governor, besting two competitors to advance to the November race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

Whitmer will be on the ballot for governor in November. She will face Attorney General Bill Schuette, who defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, state Sen.

Whitmer, a former legislative leader, defeated chemical-testing businessman Shri Thanedar and ex-Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed in Tuesday's primary.

Whitmer was considered the favorite because of her political experience and broad support from organized labor and other key groups.

Thanedar, who spent more than $11 million of his own money on the race, surged in public polls as El-Sayed struggled to raise money and Whitmer replaced her campaign manager.

The contentious primary season begged the question: Would the Democratic Party bank on a battle-tested liberal politician with existing inroads in the party apparatus, or veer left and elect an inexperienced but optimistic progressive in El-Sayed who proposed sweeping changes?

The Michigan governorship is a top target for the Democratic Party. "Michigan is one of the DGA's top targets for pickup this cycle, and Gretchen is a terrific candidate". Whitmer also endorsed a $15 minimum wage, but focused her campaign on "fixing the damn roads", a memorable promise to fix the state's infrastructure.

"Gretchen Whitmer will work every day to make sure Michiganders lives improve, and that's why she's going to be a great governor", said Democratic Governors Association Vice Chair Gina Raimondo.
