NBA trade news Kawhi Leonard joined the Toronto Raptors last month

Kawhi Leonard has finally spoken.

While last season was one to forget for Leonard, his time in San Antonio will be better defined by his 2013-14 campaign, when he helped the Spurs capture their fifth National Basketball Association title while being named MVP of the Finals.

"While I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my career", Leonard wrote.

In a letter submitted to the San Antonio Express-News, Leonard thanked Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, his teammates, and the "passionate" Spurs fan base.

One of the most talked about moves this offseason in the National Basketball Association has been the blockbuster Kawhi Leonard trade between the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors.

Leonard was traded to Toronto last month in a deal that sent him and Danny Green to the Raptors, with guard DeMar DeRozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick going back to San Antonio. Leonard, who was craving Los Angeles, reportedly was not happy to be shipped out of the country, and his letter did not address the Raptors. He was named NBA Finals MVP in 2014 after leading the Spurs to a championship but his relationship with the team deteriorated last season to the point where he asked for a trade.

Leonard is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

"Through all the ups and downs - I'm glad there were many more ups!"

Outside of that, this is a pretty boilerplate "thank you" letter from the reserved forward as he starts his new chapter in Toronto.

Shortly after a meeting between Leonard and Popovich, the Spurs moved the two-time National Basketball Association defensive player of the year to the Raptors. "I'll never forget what we have shared and accomplished together", Leonard wrote.
